Bumper Beans are printed circuit board (PCB) shock and vibration isolators designed to cushion motherboards, baseboards and other PCBs that experience mechanical stress in high vibration/shock environments. They serve as replacements for aluminum or nylon standoffs, which are traditionally used to secure a PCB to its enclosure. Embedded computer systems with EBX, ETX, PC/104 or any other form factor of PCB that is mounted directly onto a septum, enclosure, baseplate, or panel could incorporate Bumper Beans to increase reliability and extend component life to reduce harmful shock/vibration energies experienced during portable, vehicular and other demanding applications.
Made of shock-absorbing Silastic® silicone rubber with threaded aluminum nuts/screws incorporated into each end, Bumper Beans are designed to reduce G-force sine waves, particularly in high frequencies. They have a durometer hardness of 59 and measure 0.75" in length and 0.55" in diameter. Bumper Beans also have either 4-40 and/or 6-32 threaded ends in male/female or female/female versions to accommodate different mounting holes and applications.
While Bumper Beans are traditionally placed underneath circuit boards, such as with Parvus' 3x5 PC/104 extrusion or EBX enclosure, Bumper Beans can also be attached under septum-mounted railed card cages (i.e. with 6x7 enclosure) and other packaging components that incorporate mounting holes. Moreover, Railed Card Cages mounted with a 5x5 Aluminum Enclosure can use four of these shock isolators on each end of the card cage to cushion against forward/backward movement that might shift the card cage toward the enclosure’s endcaps.
